Elmendorf tests new gas masks Published Oct. 8, 2009 By Airman Jack Sanders 3rd Wing Public Affairs ELMENDORF AIR FORCE BASE, Alaska -- Elmendorf's bioenvironmental office has begun preparing the base populous for the new M-50 gas mask. Airmen deploying from Elmendorf will now be required to be fitted for the new masks. Currently, the Air Force has more than 500,000 MCU-2 gas masks service-wide, which are being replaced by the new M-50 mask for better accommodations. The new masks will offer similar protection but with a few new advancements, said Carl Hardin, 3rd Logistics Readiness Squadron stock clerk. "The main differences in the masks is that they're dual filter systems meaning there are filters on both sides. They're goggle-style lenses and that allows for better vision," said Hardin. The mask also has an internal drinking tube that can be repositioned. It's lighter, and has a better head harness. "The new mask will also fit a larger variety of face styles than the old masks," said Hardin. As of now new gas masks will only be issued to Airmen who are deploying. After deployment needs are met the new masks will be distributed to squadrons on base. The new masks have already received positive feedback at other Pacific Air Forces bases, said Hardin. The number of gas mask fit tests will rise as everyone will require an initial fit test on the M-50 mask. "One thing we did to help accommodate the demand is to add another testing day to the schedule," said Staff Sgt. Jared Thomas, 3rd Aerospace Medicine Squadron Bioenvironmental technician. Fit testing is conducted 7:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. weekdays with the exception of Thursday mornings, due to training. Once the initial fit test is completed Airmen won't be required to take another unless a new size or type mask is issued. An individual will also need another fit test if they gain or loseĀ 10 percent or more of their body weight or experience extensive dental work, facial surgery, scarring, or disfigurement. Airmen who are required to get new masks will be notified to get fit tested by their Unit Deployment manager. For more information or to schedule a gas mask fit test call, 552-3985.
