Currently, Mount Spurr, about 80 miles from JBER, is active and may erupt. The primary risk to JBER is ash fall; the last time Mount Spurr erupted was in 1992, and the Anchorage area received about a quarter of an inch of ash fall.
Volcanic ash, unlike wildfire ash, is made of tiny particles of rock. It will scratch your car and clog the air filter, and it can cause respiratory and eye issues.

In addition to a basic disaster supply kit that you should have for any emergency you should have the additional supplies on hand for an ashfall event:

o Dust masks for adults and children such as a N95 respirator.

o Spare air and oil filters, windshield wipers and washer fluid for vehicles.

           o Plastic sheeting and tape to cover sensitive equipment and/or ease cleanup. Generally covering computers is not necessary as modern electronics are resilient to small amounts of ash like we expect from a Spurr eruption but should be considered for sensitive equipment and just to keep things clean.

While wildfires generally occur in the summer, earthquakes can happen at any time and without warning. 
Most quakes are small -- so small you likely won't feel them, or just barely do. In fact, Alaska has more than 20,000 earthquakes per year. But on Nov. 30, 2018, a magnitude 7.1 earthquake shook Southcentral Alaska, doing a great deal of damage to homes, businesses, and infrastructure and injuring 117 people. Noticeable aftershocks continued for days.

• If an earthquake strikes when you're inside, remember to "Drop, Cover, and Hold On." Get under a table or against an inside wall away from windows and falling debris. Get low to the ground, cover your head and neck, and hold on to something if possible.
• If you're outside, move to a clear area away from buildings, signs, utility lines, trees, and anything else that can fall. Stay on the ground.
• If you're driving, you may only notice a quake if it feels like your tires suddenly went flat. Pull over away from overpasses, trees, and utility lines, stop, and stay in your car.

After an earthquake: 

• There will be more -- these are aftershocks.
• Check for injuries, and provide first aid to those around you if necessary.
• Look for damages like gas or water leaks (turn them off if you know how), sewer breaks, and downed power lines. Report these to utility companies.
• Check for building damage, and evacuate if there is a lot of damage or you feel unsafe.
• Only call 911 if you need help. Leave the phone lines open for those in need; text instead.

For many years, it was believed that the shape of Cook Inlet meant the Anchorage area didn't need to worry about tsunamis. The Alaska Department of Natural Resources' Geological and Geophysical Surveys has shown this not to be true. 
While JBER and most of Anchorage would not be inundated, a tsunami in Cook Inlet at high tide could damage the port and other infrastructure.

It's very important to have emergency kits for you and your family members.

You can assemble your kit, store items in airtight plastic bags, and put the entire kit in one or two easy-to-carry containers such as a plastic bag or heavy-duty bucket, or a duffel bag.

Ready.gov recommends tailoring emergency kits to threats in the local area in addition to the basics.

These basic kits include:

•  A three-day supply of water and non-perishable food

•  First-aid kit

•  Important documents

•  Flashlight and batteries, or cranked flashlight

•  Hand-cranked radio

•  Multi-tool

•  Personal hygiene items

•  Extra cash

•  Emergency blankets

•  Map of the area

This covers the basics. Also consider a whistle to signal for help, a dust mask to help filter contaminated air, and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter in place. Items for personal sanitation could include moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties.

Tools such as a wrench or pliers to turn off utilities might be needed. In addition to a food supply, a mess kit with paper cups, plates, paper towels and plastic utensils and a manual can opener for food. A cell phone with chargers and a backup battery are also recommended.

In addition to general things, Ready.gov also recommends adding the following items to your emergency supply kit based on your individual needs:

•  Prescription and non-prescription medications such as pain relievers, anti-diarrhea medication, antacids or laxatives

•  Glasses and contact lens solution

• Infant formula, bottles, diapers, wipes, diaper rash cream

• Pet food and extra water for your pet

• Important family documents such as copies of insurance policies, identification and bank account records saved electronically or in a waterproof, portable container

• Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person

• Complete change of clothing appropriate for your climate and sturdy shoes

• Household chlorine bleach and medicine dropper to disinfect water

• Fire extinguisher

• Matches in a waterproof container

• Paper and pencil

• Books, games, puzzles or other activities for children
