JBER airman victim in Dec. 15 Wasilla fire

A 39-year-old airman assigned to the 673d Contracting Squadron, Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, has been identified as the victim in a fire which occurred the night of Dec. 15 in Wasilla, Alaska.

The fire is being investigated by the Alaska State Fire Marshal and the cause of death is under investigation by the Alaska State Medical Examiner’s office.

Tech. Sgt. Steven Wesley Huffines, a contracting officer and native of Van, Texas, reported to JBER, for the second time, in July 2017.

Huffines joined the Air Force in May 2004 and had previous assignments at Barksdale and Laughlin Air Force Bases.

“Wes was a great Non-commissioned Officer and leader,” said Lt. Col. Jon L. Hobart, 673d Contracting Squadron commander. ‘You could count on him to be at your side and ready to serve, regardless of the circumstance.  Our sincere condolences go out to his family, friends, and fellow Airmen.”

Huffines’ awards and decorations include two Joint Service Commendation Medals, three Air Force Commendation Medals, a Joint Service Achievement Medal, and four Air Force Achievement Medals.
