North Pole, Alaska – Sergeant Joe Cool detains a suspected terrorist after a trip wire to an improvised explosive devise was found while searching his vehicle during an Entry Control Point stop. NORTH POLE, Alaska – Government and civic leaders look on as Sergeant Adam Dack, Nebraska National Guard, pats down a simulated potential terrorist attempting to pass through the exercise entry control point May 9 during a simulated multiple vehicle attack on the North Pole Refinery Complex. The scenario was part of the Alaska Shield/Northern Edge 2007 exercise, which runs May 7-18. Various government and civic leaders were invited to observe the day’s activities to learn about interagency cooperation between the Department of Defense and civil authorities. (Staff Sgt. J.G. Controller observes exercise mass casualty scenario during Alaska Shield/Northern Edge 07
NORTH POLE, Alaska – Renee Ryback, an exercise controller with the Alaska State Hospital Nursing Association, monitors participants as a mass casualty exercise scenario develops at an industrial site May 9. Civilian and military exercise participants responded to a simulated multiple vehicle attack on the North Pole Refinery Complex resulting in mass casualties. Military, civilians partner for vital disaster training
NORTH POLE, Alaska - Tech. Sgt. Everett Emerson, an Air National Guard medic from Kulis Air National Guard Base, Alaska, works with firefighters from the North Pole Fire Department to secure a simulated accident victim on a backboard for transportation to the Fairbanks Memorial Hospital May 9. "We've trained for mass casualty exercises, but never this big before," Sergeant Emerson said. The May 9 scenario was part of the Alaska Shield/Northern Edge 2007 exercise which is scheduled from May 7-18. Civilian, military and other government agencies are coming together for the large scale exercise which is designed to test all agencies' preparedness, interaction and response to a variety of incidents ranging from natural disasters to terrorist attacks and other emergencies.
