On May 18, 2021, JBER will host an Arbor Day Celebration at 10 a.m. outside the Aurora Elementary School. During the ceremony, JBER will be presented a Tree City USA award by the State of Alaska Division of Forestry, on behalf of the National Arbor Day Foundation.

“This year, JBER is being recognized for 26 years of commitment to the objectives of being a Tree City U.S.A.,” said Charlene Johnson, 673d Civil Engineer Squadron biologist.

JBER has been recognized as a Tree City USA, in part, by its recognition of Arbor Day and its commitment to planting and caring for trees in the community. These events began on Fort Richardson in 1995 and on Elmendorf in 2000. In 2011, the recognition was made to the unified Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. Events in the JBER community have taken place on JBER-Elmendorf and JBER-Richardson in most years.

Students and staff from the Aurora Elementary School will participate in Tuesday’s event.

“JBER is honored to share this event with the students, staff, and teachers of Aurora Elementary School, who have participated in many JBER Arbor Day events over these past 26 years,” said Johnson.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, a white spruce tree will be planted near the school.

Due to COVID-19 gathering limitations, this event is not open to spectators and media availability is limited. All participants are required to wear a mask except the designated speakers when addressing the audience.

Media who wish to cover the Arbor Day event on Tuesday, May 18, should contact the JBER Public Affairs office by sending an email to jber.pa.mediaops@us.af.mil or calling (907) 552-8160 before 5 p.m., Monday, May 17, and provide the name of the media outlet, the reporter and a phone number.
