JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska -- The Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson Library will offer service members and families an opportunity to shed their day-to-day uniforms and switch to tights, suits of armor or masks at the annual Comic Con, Jan. 14 from 1 to 3 p.m.
“Originally the purpose of the program was aimed at young Soldiers and Airmen because of their interest in comics and graphic novels at that age, but it really morphed into a family program,” said Jody Evans, 673d Force Support Squadron library technician.
The library staff has spent three months preparing for the event and will offer activities for all ages, said Pamela Medolo, 673d FSS supervisory librarian.
“This is our third Comic Con,” Evans said. “The first year we had 100 attendees and last year we had 300, so we’re expecting quite a big turnout.”
Upon entering the magical doors of the realm that is Comic Con, everyone will be greeted with free pins from various characters or super heroes and the first 200 children will receive free books.
Cosplayers from the 501st Legion Organization will stroll through the crowds in full Star Wars gear throughout the event.
“Super hero boot camp” will be available for children who wish to earn their super hero status, after completing an obstacle course.
Children will be able to make masks and Wonder Woman accessories at craft stations to complete their look. The face-painting station is also great stop before hitting the photo booth for free pictures.
For the adults interested in testing their knowledge, a trivia contest will offer the opportunity to win a 50th Anniversary Spock action figure, Evans said.
Everyone will have the opportunity to don their best wardrobe to enter the costume contest and win a prize.
“The contest will be divided into children, teen and adult categories,” Evans said.
Throughout the event, The Empire Strikes Back film will be playing for breaks in between activities.
Though Comic Con only comes around once a year, the fun doesn’t have to end. A comic book trade and swap program is available at the library year-round.
“You can bring in your comics to the library and swap them out for free,” Evans said. “We hope to keep the trading going and encourage people to keep bringing more comics in.”
