Arctic Warrior of the Week

U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Grant Abney, center, 673d Medical Support Squadron Medical Equipment Repair Center biomedical equipment technician, is recognized as the Arctic Warrior of the Week at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, Nov. 25, 2020. When Abney arrived at JBER in July 2020, he became responsible for the complete lifecycle maintenance of more than 5,800 medical devices. He holds a network security certification and was instrumental in the successful implementation of the Air Force Medical Service’s records platform, MHS Genesis, at JBER. Abney single-handedly configured 155 connectivity engines and device adapters for bedside medical device integration and affixed QR codes, a type of matrix barcode, to each piece of equipment to allow patient/equipment association. Additionally, he coordinated with Information Systems Management and Facility Management to establish necessary network infrastructure for the project. Abney worked 23 straight hours to troubleshoot network latency issues to ensure validation efforts were successful on “go-live” day. The AWOW is an award highlighting JBER’s top-performing Airmen.
