Army Sgt. Nevia Thomas, assigned to the 539th Composite Truck Company (Light), 17th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, U.S. Army Alaska, sits with fellow newly-minted noncommissioned officers during an NCO induction ceremony at the Alaska Army National Guard armory on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, Dec. 6, 2019, as the group makes the career transition to junior leaders, and are promoted to the rank of sergeant. When Army Soldiers are promoted to the noncommissioned officer ranks they become the first level of authority in their Soldiers' chains of command, and are responsible for their charges' health, welfare, training and discipline.
