Tiny, dedicated crew on remote atoll supports Pacific air traffic
An Air Force KC-135 Stratotanker from the 168th Air Refueling Wing at Eielson Air Force Base rests on the tarmac across the wishbone-shaped lagoon at Wake Island Airfield in the mid-Pacific. The tanker ferried 32 personnel to and from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage for a biannual inspection of the island’s contractors, facilities, historic landmarks and wildlife preserves.
