Light pillars: an optical illusion
Light pillars shine brightly over Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, Jan. 6, 2014. The pillars appear in the sky when hexagonal ice crystals reflect light. The phenomenon usually occurs between temperatures of 14-above, to 4-below zero Fahrenheit. (U.S. Air Force photo by Staff Sgt. Sheila deVera)
