USS Anchorage commissioned amidst falling snow
PACIFIC OCEAN (April 22, 2013) Deck department Sailors direct a landing craft air cushion (LCAC) into the well deck of the San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship Pre-Commissioning Unit (PCU) Anchorage (LPD 23). Anchorage is en route to its namesake city of Anchorage, Alaska, for its commissioning ceremony May 4. The LCAC is a high-speed, over-the-beach fully amphibious landing craft, capable of carrying a 60 to 75-ton payload. It is used to transport the weapons systems, equipment, cargo and personnel of the Marine Air-Ground Task Force from ship to shore. (U.S. Navy photo/Petty Officer 1st Class James R. Evans)
