JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska -- Road and gate construction projects on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson starting in May and continuing through the summer may affect traffic on the Glenn Highway.
Beginning May 13, construction on Provider Drive from Vandenberg to Westover will be constricted due to pavement replacement project which may cause inbound traffic to be backed up outside the Muldoon Gate. No oversize vehicles, to include RVs and vehicles with trailers, will be permitted on Provider Drive during the construction.
On May 20, the inbound lanes of the Boniface Gate will be closed for construction and security upgrades through June 9. During the construction period, inbound and outbound traffic will be rerouted through the gate’s outbound lanes. On 10 June the outbound lanes of the Boniface Gate will be closed for construction and security upgrades through June 30. During the construction period, inbound and outbound traffic will be rerouted through the gate’s inbound lanes. This will reduce the traffic to one lane, each way. Traffic entering and leaving the base, as well as the traffic on the Glenn Highway and surrounding areas, may become congested.
Construction and the closure of the Muldoon Gate is set to begin in July and continue into September. This project widens Provider road to 4 lanes and installs a roundabout at the Wilkins/Provider intersection.
The construction projects will bring the gate infrastructure into compliance with Department of Defense directives and the Chief of Staff of the Air Force's guidance on improving installation perimeter security.
“We know these projects can be disruptive and inconvenient for the community, and we appreciate everyone's patience as these projects progress,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Patricia Csànk, commander of JBER and the 673d Air Base Wing. “We encourage everyone to use alternate gates to avoid congestion at the gates under construction.”
