JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska -- MEDIA ADVISORY
On Friday, Mar. 1, 2019, the 673d Security Forces Squadron will hold an official Military Working Dog Retirement Ceremony for MWD Kimba at 1:30 p.m. at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.
In her eight-year service career, Kimba has been assigned to JBER and seven different handlers. Her duties included base-wide foot patrols, narcotics detection, theft deterrence, escorting funds, patrolling demonstrations, and facilitating training for her assigned handlers.
Out of approximately 2500 dogs that are tested for military service, only approximately 750 dogs are selected. From those selected to attend the rigorous military working dog training course at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, approximately one-fourth fail and are removed from the training. In November 2000, the President signed “Robby’s Law,” enabling military working dogs suitable for adoption to retire after their military service.
Kimba has dedicated her life to protecting her handlers, JBER personnel, and this installation. We are pleased to honor MWD Kimba at her retirement ceremony.
