Emergency Management releases SIP tips

  • Published
The following are tips to assist in Shelter In Place situations. Shelter In Place is taking immediate shelter where you are for a few hours.

What?
- Definition of Sheltering In Place is to go indoors, close up the building, and wait for the danger to pass
- Sheltering In Place is used if a migrating toxic vapor plume resulting from a accident or terrorist activity could quickly overtake unprotected people. It is used for a limited amount of time, no more than three hours.

When?
- Shelter in place will be announced over the giant voice. We will use every means available to notify you.
- Sheltering in place needs to be immediate. Every minute counts!

Where?
- Select a safe room with the fewest windows, vents, and doors.
- A large room, preferably with a water supply, is desirable, something like a master bedroom that is connected to a bathroom.

How?
- Close and lock all doors and windows (if possible seal with plastic and tape), turn off all fans, and heating and air conditioning systems and wait inside until all clear has been announced.
- Have towels to block the bottoms of each door, pre-cut plastic sheeting to cover windows or vents, duct tape to secure the plastic and seal doors and a first aid kit.
