‘Should I stay or should I go’ is a common question – even in a military career. The Informed Decision Seminar helps Airmen understand every option available to them before they either separate or reenlist.

“The program is designed to help people who are considering transitioning out of the military or are undecided,” said Senior Master Sgt. Shane Holtz, JBER career assistance advisor. “So what we do is provide options to let them know what is available to them to help them make a decision on whether or not to reenlist.”

The four-hour IDS includes subject matter experts who talk about financial and educational benefits, the Palace Chase and Palace Front programs, Veterans Affairs, the Space available program, retraining and special duty assignments.

“It’s a four-hour [seminar] where they might find something new through information we provide them,” Holtz said. “This seminar is to help people get enough information to help make a solid decision.”

For one previous attendee, the IDS was very helpful.

“I would recommend this to those who are on the fence about whether or not they are going to stay in the military or not,” said Senior Airman Mathew Warnecke, 673d Civil Engineer Squadron execution support technician. “It let me know what my options are if I decide to separate or choose to stay in.”

He said the seminar gave him information to make an informed decision.

“[My goal for IDS] is to ensure people have a plan,” Holtz said. “If you intend to continue in the military, awesome. Let’s talk about what you want to do when you reenlist. If you separate, make sure you have something lined up or know what you will do. Military or not—have a plan.”

Though the seminar is mandatory for Air Force enlisted members with 12 to 15 months left on their first or second enlistment, anyone may attend. For more information, call at 552-7829.
