JBER hosts Arctic Thunder Special Needs and Family Day

JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska --  Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson hosted an Arctic Thunder Special Needs and Family Day July 29, 2016.

“Special Needs and Family Day is a by-invitation-only event designed to accommodate those with a physical, intellectual, or emotional condition, as well as the elderly or anybody who may have difficulty getting through the crowds during the Arctic Thunder Open House, July 30 and 31,” said Master Sgt. Candace Anthony, 673d Force Support Squadron special-needs coordinator. “We invited people in assisted living facilities and we worked with our Exceptional Family Member Program coordinators on JBER [to get the word out].”

Gates opened at 10 a.m. to more than 200 families who experienced an air show rehearsal very similar to what the public will see on Saturday and Sunday.

Attendees viewed a Military Working Dog demonstration, participated in balloon twister, saw a magician, and learned about various aircraft as they soared or remained static. The JBER Chief’s Group was also in attendance and provided concessions.

“Through events like Special Needs Day and the open house we are able to show the community what we do on a daily basis and how important it is to have their support,” Anthony said.

Twenty-six JBER service members volunteered for the day’s event – escorting, assisting, and altogether helping meet the needs of the families, she said.

Installation personnel were also given the opportunity to experience the fast-paced nature of Arctic Thunder on a much smaller scale, Anthony said.

“I am always looking for ways to help our community,” said Tech. Sgt. Joseph Alers, 3rd Maintenance Squadron aerospace propulsion craftsman. “Being part of this event gives us the chance to show how much we care. ... It's an opportunity for Airmen to meet new people and learn new skills while helping.”
