The Defense Commissary Agency announced the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson Commissary as the first-place winner of the Director’s Award for fiscal year 2024’s “Best Commissary Award.”

The annual award series allows DeCA to evaluate their stores’ capabilities and reward teams providing outstanding service to the military community.

“This win feels amazing,” said Victor Johnson, a member of the JBER commissary staff. “It lets us know that our hard work is paying off and makes us proud of our work here.”

Johnson, who has worked at the commissary for 11 years, said the acknowledgment shows the team their hard work is being recognized.

Qualities judged by DeCA included sales, customer service, safety, cleanliness and more. The awards were distributed in five categories determined by store location and size, with JBER earning first place among superstores in the continental United States.

“Congratulations to the winning stores,” said Robert Bunch, executive director for the Store Operations Group. “The employees in these stores have worked hard to deliver the commissary benefit to our patrons all year long. Their excellence is a testimony to their dedication to serve our military community.”

Commissaries are a core support element for the military community and contribute to family readiness. The JBER Commissary’s success is a testament to the invaluable contribution it provides to patrons daily.
