JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska -- JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska - Service members, families, and civilians at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson gathered the week of March 24 through 31 to observe Holy Week, a period of deep spiritual reflection and celebration in the Christian faith that concludes with Easter Sunday.
Holy Week, which begins with Palm Sunday and ends with Easter, is one of the most sacred times of the year for Christians. At JBER, chaplains and religious support teams organized multiple services, prayer groups, and community gatherings throughout the week to accommodate the diverse Christian population on base.
“This week allows us to slow down and reflect on the deeper meaning of sacrifice, renewal and hope,” said Chaplain (1st Lt.) Daniel Duplantis, the head chaplain of the 673d Air Base Wing. “It’s a meaningful opportunity for connection and spiritual strength.”
The observance included a Palm Sunday service, Holy Thursday communion, Good Friday meditations, and Easter sunrise services held at chapels and outdoor locations around JBER. Volunteers helped prepare services and support those attending from across the installation
.
In addition to Christian observances, base chaplains emphasized the ongoing support available for service members of all faiths or none. “JBER’s religious support team is here for everyone, we have all our unique services but all our services are for everyone,” Chaplain (Maj.) John McDougal added.
The observance of Holy Week at JBER not only offered a time of worship but also underscored the importance of community, resilience, and faith among the Airmen, Soldiers and families who serve.
