As winter comes to a close, the changing season brings a variety of opportunities for the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson community. With temperatures slowly rising and days growing longer, the final chances to take advantage of winter-related outdoor events are at hand. How-ever, JBER still offers plenty of community-oriented outdoor winter events before summer arrives.

With more than eight major outdoor excursions available through JBER Outdoor Recreation—including cross-country skiing, fat-tire biking, and beginner ice fishing—there are options for the whole family. Whether you're looking for a high-speed thrill or a relaxing afternoon in the Arctic, JBER is equipped to meet your recreational needs.

“Arctic resilience is something that's definitely taught and experienced at varying levels up here,” said Jim Scraper, recreation and rental supervisor at the JBER Outdoor Recreation Center. “One of those ways is just having a fun time, we’ve got plenty of opportunities, all you have to do is just sign up.”

Beyond providing unforgettable moments and lasting memories, outdoor activities offer significant health benefits. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 40% of Alaskans experience vitamin D deficiency due to the state’s long, dark winters. Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to increased anxiety, lower energy levels, and depression, making outdoor activity crucial for maintaining physical and mental well-being—especially as hours of sunlight increase in Alaska.

“If you're looking for something fun to do for the weekend with family,” said Bria Rivera-McHugh, a Recreation Rental Assistant at the Outdoor Recreation Center. “Hiking and camping equipment, cross country skis, ice skates, and everything you could possibly need for ice fishing, I don't think realize how great this time of year is. If you want to see some amazing views, now's the time to get active.”

Looking for something more competitive? The Hillberg Ski Area is hosting the Spring Meltdown Slush Cup, featuring a downhill snowboard race, a terrain park competition, and the beloved Slush Cup, where participants ski or snowboard, across the ski area’s pond. Costumes are encouraged, and families are invited to come cheer on participants and enjoy the festive atmosphere.

While summer is something to look forward to, JBER community members are encouraged to take advantage of the final winter activities before the season ends. For more information or to sign up for upcoming events, visit JBERLife.com or the official JBER Life Facebook page.
