A dedication plaque can be seen in front of the 673d Logistic Readiness Squadron vehicle maintenance shop during an annual memorial service in honor of U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Timothy Bowles at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, March 15, 2023. Each year, the 673rd Logistic Readiness Squadron honors the life and legacy of Bowles, who died on March 15, 2009, supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in Eastern Afghanistan. He was killed when his vehicle was destroyed by an improvised explosive device, while on a four-vehicle patrol checking on a local school. The title Gold Star distinguishes family who lost a loved one in military service. Today, immediate family members (parent, sibling, spouse, or child) receive a Gold Star from the Department of Defense, to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
