Road menace: potholes Published Oct. 1, 2008 ELMENDORF AIR FORCE BASE, Alaska -- Alaska has extreme temperature changes which lead to the infamous potholes. Water and temperature extremes lead to weakened road surfaces. The cold freezes the moisture in the ground causing it to expand, which leads to cracking the asphalt surface. Water will then penetrate the crack and slowly deteriorate the pavement. That is when the potholes start to form. If left unrepaired severe damage could happen to your vehicle as you drive over it. There is help available in just 3 easy steps: Step 1: Take note of where the pothole is located. (Street name, cross streets, or building numbers.) Step 2: Call the 3rd Civil Engineer Squadron Snow Barn at 552-2994 / 552-2994. Weather and mission permitting they will have the pothole repaired within 24 hours of the phone call. Step 3: Follow-up: Drive by the area after the repair period timeframe to ensure the pothole was repaired. (Information provided by 3rd Civil Engineer Squadron)
