Sit ... stay ... come ... military working dog, Dino obeyed his way through the Rocky Mountain K9 Trials in Colorado Springs, Colo. at the Air Force Academy Sept. 22. Staff Sgt. Kurt Lugar, 3rd Security Forces Squadron MWD handler, and Dino, a Belgian Malinois, had a challenge with the environment but still came home with a 3rd place victory in detection/patrol.

Dino and Sergeant Lugar were judged in several categories to include patrol/detection, obedience, handler protection, fastest/hardest hitting dog and advanced obstacle course. This competition was Dino and Sergeant Lugar's first.

Dino, a Narcotics and detection/patrol K9, has been assigned with Sergeant Lugar for eight months of his three year career.

"It gives the handlers and trainers an idea on how other bases are training their (military working dogs) and to what degree," said Tech. Sgt. Christopher Wilson, 3rd Security Forces Squadron kennel master. "It also gives the handlers an opportunity to compete against other bases throughout DOD (Department of Defense) and sometimes civilian agencies."
