'Smoke Out' set for Nov. 20

On Nov. 20 Elmendorf will celebrate the "Great American Smoke Out."

Held the third Thursday in November, the GASO motivates both smokers and smokeless tobacco users across the country to quit for one day and hopefully for a lifetime.

Currently, 22.7 percent of active-duty members use tobacco products.
GASO events provide fun ways to kick the tobacco habit for the day, said Tech. Sgt. Mark Jaynes, Health and Wellness Center NCO in-charge.

"Being a quitter is not always a bad thing. In this case, it can save your life," he added.

The HAWC sponsors a variety of outreach initiatives in squadrons, schools, and at the 3rd Medical Group. These initiatives encourage participation from the general public.

"We want family and friends to support people in their attempt to quit tobacco for 24-hours-- and then for good," Sergeant Jaynes said.

This year, the HAWC has partnered with local elementary schools, Drug Reduction Office, and Pfizer for GASO.

Squadrons may contact the HAWC to receive information about the Adopt a Tobacco User Program.

"The intent of the program is to pair commanders, supervisors, colleagues, friends, or family members who are former or non-tobacco users with a person who is committed to quitting tobacco," said Sergeant Jaynes.

The program begins Nov. 20 and lasts 24-hours. Tobacco users receive a "quit kit" that includes a stress ball, candy, water bottle, and educational materials. Kits are also given to members who "adopt" a tobacco user for the day.

Another initiative held prior to the Smokeout will take place at Aurora, Mt. Spurr, and Orion elementary schools.

Health and Special Education Learning Specialists will coordinate a poster contest encouraging students to create anti-tobacco messages. Prizes will be awarded winner courtesy of the Drug Demand Office and selected posters will be displayed in the 3rd MDG.

A lunch-and-learn session is scheduled for Nov. 18 at the 3rd MDG commander's conference room, to present information about the HAWC's tobacco cessation classes, success stories from former tobacco users, and information about the tobacco assisting drug Chantix.

In support of quitting "cold turkey," the Elmendorf Fitness Center also coordinates an annual Turkey Trot. The two mile run will be held inside the fitness center at noon Nov. 21. First and second place male and female participants receive a free turkey.

Lastly, Smokeout information tables will be set up at the hospital and fitness center where the general public may gather information about tobacco cessation and the effects of second hand smoke.
