Action Line: Augumentees for Muldoon gate Published Dec. 9, 2008 ELMENDORF AIR FORCE BASE, Alaska -- Question: Can you explain why we are now providing gate guard augumentees for the Muldoon Gate? Thank you. Response: Thank you for your inquiry regarding the Muldoon Gate. First, I want to make it very clear that this decision was not prompted in any way by the opening of the new shopping center outside the Muldoon Gate. The reason I decided to open the Muldoon Gate on the weekends is simply to provide better support to our entire community. Our on-base residents with children attending activities at Bartlett High School and the many Team Elmendorf and Team Richardson members living in the Moose Crossing, Muldoon, and Arctic Valley areas are simply better served by having this gate open on the weekend. Opening Muldoon Gate on the weekends provides better access for members requiring the Emergency Room and Labor and Delivery services provided by the 3rd Medical Group. It also provides better access to the commissary, exchange, and other benefits that our veterans and military members living in Eagle River and communities farther north have worked so hard to earn. Finally, opening Muldoon Gate relieves pressure on the long lines at Boniface Gate, which is both an irritant and a Force Protection issue. I recognize we are a busy Wing, but believe the benefit to the community at large outweighs the cost of two Security Forces personnel and two augmentees spread across four groups. This is an initiative supporting our entire community and everyone must help carry the burden. However, if this proves to be an unproductive or mission-impacting initiative, I will revisit the issue in the future.
