Alaskan hazard to flight
An F-22 Raptor takes off from Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska, while Mount Redoubt spews steam into the morning sky. Mount Redoubt, which is 100 miles southwest of Elmendorf, has been active for months, and is keeping emergency managers and early warning personnel on the edge of their seats with periodic eruptions and discharges of steam. So far only a small amount of volcanic ash has fallen on the base. (U.S. Air Force photo/Master Sgt Keith Brown)
