If people are feeling down because they just arrived to Alaska as their new permanent duty station and thought they had to wait a year or two to buy a hunting license at the resident rate, they don't have to worry any more.

At the start of 2009, a new law approved by the Joint Alaska State Legislative Veterans' Caucus, was put into place. The law states that all active duty military members can now purchase a hunting license at the resident rate of $25 or purchase the hunting and fishing combination for $48. However the Alaska National Guard members and all military reservists can get their hunting and fishing license for free.

People should keep in mind that because you can purchase the license at the resident rate it doesn't make active duty members a resident. So when going hunting for mountain goat, dall sheep, brown and grizzly bear you will still need a guide.
