Tug o' war, volleyball, tricycle races and an obstacle course sound like activities for a day at a children's summer camp. However, these "campers" were grownups, and they called it Hero Games.

The competing "heroes" represented area first responders and military members during events June 27 in downtown Anchorage.

Ten active-duty Airmen from Elmendorf competed with members of the Air Force Reserve, Anchorage Police and Fire Department, Alaska Army and Air National Guard, Coast Guard and Alaska Medical Support team.

Elmendorf's members made up two teams - the "Arctic Warriors" and the "Winners."

"The games were a big success," said Staff Sgt. Marcus Wright, team captain for the Winners. "I was very proud of all the hard work and dedication my team put in."

The teams began the games with an obstacle course that included a fire hose drag, a Keiser Sled race, a ladder rescue, donut eating, a car tire change and a low crawl to the finish line.

The games also included water balloon volleyball, tricycle races, tug o' war, bucket brigade and litter relay.

"We are thrilled we were able to have Hero Games this year," said Cheri Spink, events director for the Anchorage Downtown Partnership. "Everyone is in good spirits and the teams are taking the competition very seriously."

One of the Air National Guard's teams, "Super Guardians," took first place, but teams may have future years to redeem themselves. Although, the Hero Games were a part of Alaska 50th year of Statehood Celebration, events director said she expects the games to become an annual event.

"Aside from the competition, this gives the Anchorage community to see the skills and strength of our military and first responders," said Spink. "This will definitely be back next year."
