CDC explains H1N1 vaccine recall

  • Published
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently recalled several lot numbers of Sanofi-Pasteur H1N1 vaccine specifically designated for children between 6 and 36 months. This was not due to any hazard associated with this vaccine. The cause of this recall was due to quality testing revealing less than ideal amounts of H1N1 antigen in the vaccine. Therefore children receiving this dose may have a less than ideal immune response. Despite this finding, the CDC is not planning any change to their vaccination plan for this age group. They are still recommending two doses at least 28 days apart for all children under 10 years old.

Elmendorf does have Sanofi-Pasteur vaccine, but none from the recalled lot numbers. We continue to provide vaccine for all children via the immunizations and pediatric clinics within the hospital. Please note that there has been a shortage of doses specifically for 4 year olds, but we recently received 180 doses for this age group.
