H1N1 vaccine update

Although occurrences of the H1N1 virus and its media coverage have begun to subside, it doesn't signify the end of the pandemic.

Rates of influenza-like illness are still higher than normal across the country. Throughout history influenza pandemics have had multiple waves that have spanned over multiple years and this strain of H1N1 isn't expected to be any different.

With that in mind, the only way to ensure immunity from the current H1N1 pandemic is by getting the vaccine or by having the infection.

Elmendorf Air Force Base has received approximately 3,000 doses of vaccine and is still providing vaccine to tier-1 beneficiaries. Tier-1 includes pregnant women, those who have contact with infants less than six months old, children more than 6 months old and people up to 24 years old, health care workers and adults up to age 64 with high risk medical conditions.

H1N1 is continuing to infect infants, children and young adults at much higher rates than seasonal flu. Hospitalization rates are highest in children under 4 years of age and since August 2009, 204 children have died in the U.S from H1N1-related complications.
Although vaccine delivery has been delayed, doses are available at the 3rd Medical Group and off base at local clinics and pharmacies.

Service members, veterans and dependents who meet the tier 1 criteria are encouraged to get immunized before another wave emerges. Getting immunized not only protects the individual, but mass immunity reduces the ability of the virus to spread to others in our community.

Those outside Tier 1 who desire to be immunized have a few options.

· If a family member or retiree wishes to receive the immunization at one of the State of Alaska sponsored vaccination clinics, they will be served like any other Alaskan. This is a free service.

· If a family member or retiree wishes to wait for their supporting medical treatment facility to have the H1N1 vaccine available, they can do so and there is no charge for this service. Current service members are encouraged to wait until doses are available at their servicing MTF.

· If a family member or retiree wishes to receive the immunization from a private physician or pharmacy that charges an administration fee, they can request reimbursement through TRICARE. Information to process the claim can be found at http://www.triwest.com/beneficiary/claims.aspx
