If you have ever been in the wing commanders office you are likely to be greeted by a smiling secretary sitting behind a desk full of treats and flowers.
This month marks 28 years of service for Joanne Frank who has been proudly serving the 3rd Wing and has made an indelible mark on the lives of those who have passed through the wing commander's office and on the commanders as well. Those items adorning her desk are tokens of love and appreciation from those who have been touched by her work ethic, dedication and friendship.

"Joanne is a very rare person and special beyond words," said former 3rd Wing Commander, retired Maj. Gen. Dutch Remkes. "She is much more than a secretary; she's a trusted confidante, a sounding board, a cheerleader, a coach, and a friend to all. Anyone who has ever had a challenge too hard to handle should just follow Joanne's daily example. She always has an abundance of grace, humility, cheer and sincerity."

As the wing commanders secretary Frank is responsible for maintaining the wing commanders busy schedule, handling required TDY details and keep him apprised of details concerning distinguished visitors. Most people can't imagine having the same job for nearly three decades, but Frank can attest that there is no monotony in her job.

"I never thought about working in the wing this long," said Frank. "Every day is different. You can plan the day's schedule out or even the week's schedule, and 90 percent of the time it will change."

Over the years Frank can recall some of the happiest memories in this job.

"My commanders always have a way of surprising me," said Frank. "Gen. Douglas Fraser had a luncheon for me for one of my anniversaries and Lt. Gen. Hawk Carlisle surprised me with a dinner at Marx Bros, complete with travel by a white stretch limo. I felt like Cinderella for a night!"

During her nearly three decades as a wing employee she has contributed immensely to the success of the 3rd Wing.

"Joanne is a vital member of the 3rd Wing leadership team. Her vast knowledge of the wing and local community, and her incredible attention to detail, are invaluable," said Col. Thomas Bergeson, 3rd Wing commander. "Joanne is the maestro that keeps the whole orchestra on beat. I am truly blessed to have Joanne in the front office...she is amazing!"

With the happy memories Frank can't forget some of the sadder events in the wings history for example the E-3 crash in 1995 and the loss of two wing commanders, Brig. Gen. Thomas Tinsley and Col. Pat Paxton.

"While the wing commander is the head of the wing, Joanne Frank is and always will be the soul of the Wing, " said former 3rd Wing vice commander, retired Col. Richard Walberg. "That was never more apparent than during the dark days of late July 2008. I simply could not have been successful in leading the wing through that tragedy without her compassion, guidance and friendship."

Frank's love of her job has kept her from thinking about retiring anytime soon.

"I've had memories here I will never forget. But I love what I do and am very proud to continue to serve our Air Force and our wonderful nation."
