An Alaska National Guardsman was given a once in a lifetime opportunity when she was selected to compete in the figure bodybuilding competition at this year's Arnold Sports Festival held in Columbus, Ohio, March 3-5.

The Arnold Sports Festival was founded by Arnold Schwarzenegger and is the nation's largest multi-sport event.

Competitions within the Arnold event include: archery, boxing, amateur bodybuilding, cheerleading and dance, and many other competitive sports.

Staff Sgt. Diane Singh, an Alaska National Guard Drug Demand Reduction noncommissioned officer, will be competing in the amateur figure bodybuilding category of the sports festival.

One of the ways to qualify as a competitor in the figure bodybuilding category of the Arnold Sports Festival is to be a nationally qualified bodybuilder.

Singh met this qualification when she competed in the Emerald Cup Amateur Figure Bodybuilding competition, held April 16, 2010, in Seattle.

"This competition is different than the others I have competed in because everything I have done up to this point is going to culminate in this show," said Singh. "Every show I have done so far has been a stepping stone and learning experience. For me to say that I'm competing in the Arnold is a dream come true."

Along with a strenuous workout schedule, Singh's other challenge is her diet plan.
For the next few weeks, Singh is limited to only eating grilled chicken, fish or turkey with green vegetables, brown rice and sweet potatoes.

Another key to staying healthy with her workout plan is to drink a lot of water.

"I have always been impressed with Staff Sgt. Singh's enthusiasm before, during and after her competitions," said Tech. Sgt. Jennifer Theulen, Alaska National Guard. "Even if she wins fifth place, her smile never disappears and she only has positive things to say about the experience."

Singh has been representing the Alaska National Guard for the past two years when she competed in various bodybuilding competitions in and out of state.

Two of the competitions - NPC USA Vegas Nationals 2010 and NPC Nationals Atlanta 2010 - were nationwide.

"Ever since I started competing I've had so many Soldiers ask me questions," said Singh. "They've asked me questions about bodybuilding and what to eat. I'm always happy to help Guardsmen out and I love sharing that information with them."

Singh said she will continue to compete in different shows after the Arnold.

One show following the Arnold is the Alaska National Physique Committee State Championships held at the Egan Civic and Convention center April 30.

"She has been a role model to the women in our office, as she is always sharing fitness regiments and techniques," Theulen said. "Like I said, impressive."
