JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska -- The Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson Library will offer service members and families an opportunity to don their favorite costumes at the 4th Annual Comic Con, Jan 27th from 1 to 3 p.m.
“Initially, the program was aimed towards [young] adults, but entire families have been participating and it’s really turned into a community event,” said Jody Evans, 673d Force Support Squadron library technician.
The library staff has spent months preparing for the event and will offer activities for all ages.
“This is our fourth Comic Con and last year we had approximately 400 people show up,” Evans said. “It has grown bigger each year and people are already excited.”
Cosplayers will stroll through crowds throughout the event and there will be costume contests for adults, teens, and children.
A “super hero boot camp” will be allow for children to explore and navigate different obstacles, Evans said.
There will a photo booth available for a commemorative photo strip and free comics, children’s books, and DVDs will be available.
“For those 18 and older, a trivia contest will offer the opportunity to test your knowledge and win a prize,” Evans said.
Some military members have even offered their time to bring something new this year, Evans said. One volunteer will be creating super hero drawings for families and another volunteer will speak about how to get graphic novels printed.
If a once-a-year comic con isn’t enough, the Library offers a comic book trade and swap program available year-round.
“You can bring in your comics to the library and swap them out for free,” Evans said. “We hope to keep the trading going and encourage people to keep bringing more comics in. If there is anyone who would like donate comics to the exchange program, we would gladly take them.”
