The Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson Library is offering everyone the chance to bring their favorite book characters to life this holiday season.

The library will be giving out free rubber ducks for anyone from children to adults, to decorate in honor of their favorite literary characters and have the opportunity compete against other ducks.

“Through Dec. 13, anyone can pick up their duck,” said Tesha Mulkey, 673d FSS library technician. “The ducks are one per person, not one per family, so everyone can take part. The decorated ducks must be returned by Dec. 15 and will be sorted into three categories based on age.”

The three categories are kindergarten to 12 years old, 13 to 18 years old, and 19 and older, said Jody Evans 673d FSS library technician.

All ducks will be displayed in the library windows until Dec. 31 for decoration and voting purposes.

“During the week of Dec. 18 through the 22, anyone can come in and vote on the ducks and prizes will be awarded to the top three in each category,” Evans said. “Also, the competition is serious this year. We’ve seen a few completed ducks already and they are looking amazing.”

Last year, all available rubber ducks were picked up and this year is turning out to be no different, Evans said.

“Everyone loves these rubber ducks,” Evans said. “Surprisingly, this year we’ve had more adults [participating] than the teens and children.”

Winners will be announced the week after the voting is completed but all ducks will continue to adorn the halls throughout the holiday season.

“The decorated rubber ducks will be available for pickup on Jan. 1,” Evans said.
