The Defense Logistics Agency Disposition Services’ certified scales at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson are now open to all military ID holders at no cost.

All military members choosing a personally procured move who have orders for a permanent change of station, temporary duty, separation or retirement, or assignment to, from, or between government quarters now have access to an additional means for completing the required Traffic Management Office weigh-ins.

Weight certificates are used as the official documentation for most military units, this ensures vehicles being used for the purposes of moving household goods during a PPM are properly paid out. Two weigh-ins will need to be obtained for this purpose: the weight of the full load and empty load.

In the past, the only no-cost location to weigh a vehicle was at the Anchorage landfill near Eagle River.

“Being able to weigh a vehicle on base versus going off base will help anyone in the military that’s in the middle of a PCS,” said Kathy Wigginton, Defense Logistics Agency chief of disposition services. “The convenience of having everything here, already self-contained, might help reduce some of the stress a PPM can produce.”

The scales on JBER are in close proximity to the Temporary Lodging Facility services most military members use when they first arrive, making weighing that much easier.

“Many of the people relocating are already dealing with the stresses of moving all their household goods,” said Fay Deaton, transportation assistant at TMO.

“In addition to the stress, sometimes weather conditions here are not favorable for road travel. Having an option to drive a short distance from TLF to the certified scale on base is safer and adds an element of stress relief when access to it is so much easier.”

The DLA disposition services scales on JBER are commercial truck scales which are certified and calibrated yearly in compliance with the state of Alaska.

“We are happy to be able to provide this service to the military warfighter and families,” Wigginton said.
