Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson is gearing up for National PrepareAthon Day April 30 by providing helpful information and reliable resources to protect oneself in case of a natural disaster.

In 2014, the White House announced America’s first National PrepareAthon Day as part of President Barack Obama’s National Preparedness Initiative. April 30 was declared a reminder that disasters can happen at any time with little to no warning.

The Readiness and Emergency Management flight will set up ‘Be Ready’ information booths at the JBER Library and BX April 28 with coloring books, informational pamphlets and more.

The biggest disasters addressed are Alaska-relevant-earthquakes, floods, wildfires, winter storms and volcanoes. The ERM flight provide information about how to prepare for each of these disasters, what to do during them, and how to recover after.

One thing each preparation plan has in common is the emergency kit. A kit should have the tools necessary to keep an individual alive under the dire circumstances after a disaster.

The American Red Cross recommends an emergency kit contain water, non-perishable food, a first-aid kit, important records, flashlight, hand-cranked or battery-powered radio, extra batteries, multi-purpose tool, hygiene items, cash, emergency blanket and map(s) of the local area.
