Family Advocacy is hosting a Scream-Free Parenting class in Building 600, room A37, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., May 1, on the Richardson side of Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.

The classes aim to teach parents the importance of staying focused on themselves and remaining calm when their child is misbehaving. Staying calm helps the connection and relationship grow between parent and child.

“Most parents ask me for new techniques and things they can do to help their child's behavior improve,” said Jennifer Frysz, Family Advocacy outreach manager. “They are frustrated and overwhelmed, and at times question themselves as parents. This program offers an explanation for their child’s behavior and a new way to look at parenting.”

Classes take a positive approach to parenting that is easy to understand. It’s not about memorizing a bunch of different tactics, Frysz said. They focus on teaching parents to be in tune with themselves so that they can react less and be more engaged during crucial learning stages in their child’s life.

“I really enjoy teaching this class,” Frysz said. “I [have seen] heads nodding and excitement fill the room as people leave ready to try new things and feeling better about being a parent.”

Since the class is about focusing on yourself, growing, and calming yourself, children should not attend. All participants will receive a free copy of the program and the Scream-Free parenting book, added Frysz.
