JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska -- In a couple of weeks, children will take a one-week break from school. Students from kindergarten to high school will officially have spring break March 13 -17. The JBER youth centers will provide a wide variety of activities for children to get involved in.
The Kennecott and Two Rivers Youth Centers are offering daily programs that include arts, physical activities, 3-D printing, cross country-skiing and scheduled field trips.
“The youth centers have daily programs from arts, STEM [science, technology, engineering and math] programs, and snowshoeing,” said Deandra Wood, Kennecott youth recreation specialist. “This program offers the youth opportunities to engage in social recreation and allows them to participate in activities or use resources they may not [otherwise] have.”
The youth programs provide opportunities for youth to develop their physical, social, emotional and cognitive abilities and to experience achievement, leadership, enjoyment, friendship and recognition.
Some of the activities and field trips scheduled are the financial program which promotes financial responsibility and independence among youth by building basic money management skills; pottery painting at JBER Arts and Crafts, and tubing at Hillberg Ski Area, said James Yracheta, Two Rivers Youth Center director.
“Any parents interested can sign up or call for youth programs at any facilities,” Wood said. “They should sign up as soon as possible, as the field trips for spring break fill up fast.”
While spring break ends March 17, parents interested in enrolling children in youth programs can call the Kennecott Youth Center at 552-2266, and Two Rivers Youth Center at 384-1508.
