Should Mother Nature permit, maintenance of the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson water distribution system will begin Jan. 25, which means some base residents will be without water for a short period.

The Boniface Visitor Center, Domino’s Pizza, Exchange/Commissary, car wash, Fire Station 3, First National Bank of Alaska, and residents of Silver Run Housing will have their water shut off for four hours, from 10 p.m. on Jan. 25 until 2 a.m. Jan. 26, while 773d Civil Engineer Squadron Airmen perform maintenance on the water distribution system.

“We have to look out for the health and welfare of our [Airmen], so we may push it back until we get above zero degree temperatures,” said Stephen Ellis, 773d Civil Engineer Squadron utility system supervisor.

Regular maintenance prevents failure of the water system and keeps JBER mission ready, Ellis said.

When the water system pressure drops below regular levels, the base Bioenvironmental Engineering officials will contact the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, Ellis said. The ADEC will then issue a “boil water” notice. Housing residents will be notified through social media and flyers delivered to affected facilities. The notice will be effective until satisfactory results of samples taken from the water system are received, approximately 24 hours after test protocols begin.
