Leave

Effects of Leave on Pay and Entitlements
When an individual is on leave, they are entitled to BAS, at the standard rate, for the entire period of the leave.

Extending Leave
Members must request extensions of leave either verbally or in writing before the approved term of leave expires. Members who become ill or need hospitalization while on leave must advise the leave approving authority as soon as possible. If the member is too ill, the next of kin, attending physician, nearest military treatment facility, or American Red Cross may act on the member's behalf.

Leave Approval
Ordinary leave approval can be delegated no lower than the first line supervisor of the member requesting in Leaveweb. All other leaves, Permissive TDY, and special pass requests can be delegated no lower than squadron section commanders, deputies, equivalents.

Leave with TDY
Before leave is taken in conjunction with a TDY the commander should make certain the TDY will not be taken, scheduled, planned, or arranged, in fact or appearance, to serve the leave desires of the member. In addition, the commander should ensure no additional cost to the government is incurred incident to the leave. The leave must be authorized on the TDY orders, specifying the days and location the leave is to be taken. When the member files their travel voucher, they should be indicate the duty begin and end dates of the TDY in addition to the leave in the travel itinerary. The leave will be charged on the member's next LES.

Permissive TDY
Permissive TDY is for specific reasons for periods of absence away from the duty station. Commanders may not approve PTDY when a funded entitlement is more appropriate. Commanders charge leave for any portion not subject to PTDY limitations, such as when the purpose of the TDY is accomplished, and the member does not return to duty (Reference AFI 36-3003, paragraph 18 for details, conditions of entitlement, and procedures for processing permissive TDY).

Special Categories of Leave
Emergency Leave - Approved by the commander and coordinated with the Red Cross in cases when verified emergency situations exist. This leave is chargeable with the exception of travel days to and from the point of entry into CONUS.

Convalescent Leave - This non-chargeable leave is approved by the commander, with the written recommendation of a military physician.

Special Leave Accrual
Members are only authorized to carry forward 60 days of leave into the next fiscal year. However, when an individual is assigned to a HFP area for more than 120 days they may carry forward up to 90 days into the new fiscal year. This Special Leave Accrual (SLA) is computed by the number of days brought into the HFP area plus leave accrued, minus leave taken (see AFI 36-3003, paragraph 16 for more information).

Starting and Stopping Leave
Leave begins and ends in the local area. The local area is the place where members live and from which they commute to the duty station. Leave is charged for non-duty days when bridged by leave or permissive TDY (e.g. no successive Monday through Friday leaves). An exception to this is an unplanned unusual or emergency situation when the member is in the local area.
