Sergeant Major Nicholas J. Bingham is the installation sergeant major, United States Army Garrison, Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. In this position, he serves as the senior enlisted advisor to the installation commander, providing guidance on all matters affecting Soldiers, families, and installation readiness. He supports a joint installation serving over 35,000 service members, dependents, and retirees, ensuring quality of life, infrastructure, and services enable mission readiness across the joint force.
Bingham was born in Phoenix, Arizona, and entered the United States Army on May 11, 2004. He completed One Station Unit Training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, where he earned the military occupational specialty of 12B, combat engineer.
His previous duty assignments include service with the 18th Engineer Company “Sappers,” where he served as a driver, team leader, section leader, and squad leader. He deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom for 15 months (2006–2007) and Operation Iraqi Sovereignty for 12 months (2009–2010), conducting combat engineer operations in Baghdad, Iraq.
Upon completion of Drill Sergeant School, he served as a drill sergeant and senior drill sergeant at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, shaping the next generation of Soldiers. He later served as a platoon sergeant and operations sergeant with the 73rd Engineer Company, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, “Arctic Sappers” at Fort Wainwright, Alaska.
Bingham subsequently served as an Observer, Coach, and Trainer at the National Training Center, Fort Irwin, California. He then served as a first sergeant at Fort Carson, Colorado, where he also held duties as a battalion operations sergeant.
Following completion of the Sergeants Major Academy at Fort Bliss, Texas, he served as sergeant major of the 1st Cavalry Division Engineer Cell. Most recently, he served as the battalion command sergeant major for the 62nd Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade, at Fort Hood, Texas before assuming duties at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson.
