JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska - A paratrooper assigned to 3rd Battalion, 509th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, U.S. Army Alaska, prepares M67 fragmentation grenades for live-fire training at Kraft Range on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska, Dec. 12, 2017. A ‘pit’ noncommissioned officer supervised the Soldiers throwing grenades to maintain a safe instructional environment, enforce precaution standards, and direct them on proper handling of explosives. The fragmentation hand grenade has a lethal radius of five meters and can produce casualties up to 15 meters, dispersing fragments as far as 230 meters.
