JBER Youth Programs offer Snow Sports Program

JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska --

Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson Youth Programs have partnered with the Outdoor Adventure Program to offer youth ages 6 to 18 a snow sports program, at the Hillberg Ski Area.

The program, scheduled to run until March 2018, consists of three 90-minute skiing or snowboarding lessons. The $60 fee includes lift tickets, rental equipment, and transportation to and from the Hillberg Ski Area from the Kennecott and Two Rivers Youth Centers.

All registration for the program must go through central registration at the Kodiak Child Development Center by calling 384-2514.

“This program was set up to provide JBER children and teens with both a convenient and affordable opportunity for those wanting to experience a new sport or continue to advance in the level they are at,” said Deandré Wood, youth recreation specialist at the Kennecott Youth Center. “This is the second year we have been able to offer this type of winter sports program to JBER families and we’d love to see more people utilize it.”

Last year more than 50 participants benefited from the 2-to-1 ratio lessons.

With the price dropping from $85 to $60 this year, an increase in participation is expected, so early registration is suggested, Woods said.

“Regardless of the potential increase in numbers, the program is set up to provide a maximum of a 1-to-8 ratio, this provides a more tailored learning experience,” Woods said. “Once the children get to the lessons, they will be divided up into small groups with instructors specifically trained to teach skiing or snowboarding to children.”

All instructors have completed the required federal background checks as well as the same safeguards staff at the JBER Child Development Centers must complete.

“Our instructors are trained thoroughly and are great at working with all ages of children,” said Mary Pederson, Hillberg Lesson Center recreational assistant. “This particular program offers an extremely reduced rate, along with a unique chance for parents to ignite a passion in their children by enabling them to participate in a sport that is favorable to the Alaska environment. It is rare for a base to have such a great skiing and snowboarding facility available and personnel should take advantage of this amazing opportunity.”

Students must come prepared for the winter environment. Snow pants, a warm jacket with insulating layers, warm hat, gloves or mittens, neck warmer, water, and snacks are recommended.

If students show up without proper gear, they will not be allowed to participate in the lesson that day and no makeup lesson will be offered.

All participants must be registered with the youth programs and have a current immunization record.
